ALBUM REVIEW : TONIGHT ALIVE

TONIGHT ALIVE - "underworld" (Hopeless)

Australian rock band TONIGHT ALIVE releases their 4th studio album "Underworld" Friday (Jan 12) on Hopeless Records. "Underworld" marks the first album without recently departed guitarist Whakaio Taahi. When a member leaves a band, you don't know what to expect. When I first heard "Temple" I got super excited. Tonight Alive was headed back towards a more rock oriented sound from "Limitless". "Limitless" was an experimental album that grew on me over time. I really wanted to hear the band rock like they do live. "Temple" was them going back to that sound and it has all the elements of a great catchy Tonight Alive song.

When they followed up with "Crack My Heart" (which sounds like it would be at home on "Limitless") I wasn't sure what Tonight Alive we were going to get on this album. Like the previous album, the track has grown on me with repeat listens. For the third pre-release single, Tonight Alive released "Disappear" featuring Lynn Gunn from Pvris. "Disappear" took care of any doubt I might have had about this album. The intertwining of Jenna and Lynn's voices are infectious on this track.

Now we have a nice little mix here.

"Underworld" is a fantastic listen. Upon first full listen, two songs immediately grabbed me. "Waiting for the End" is blunt and urgent while "Just for Now" shows a new vulnerability in Jenna's song writing. On the other end, the track "In My Dreams" is a logical progression from the previous album "Limitless" to where this new album is going while the opening track "Book of Love" will immediately grab anyone that was a fan of the first two records.

I'm not going to spoil the surprise that is the the final track "My Underworld" featuring Corey Taylor. Go into it knowing the track is completely unexpected and victorious.

"Underworld" could easily be the best album Tonight Alive has ever released. The album will grow on you the more you listen to it. Jenna really looked to new places for her lyrics and the album pays off tenfold. I expect this album will propel Tonight Alive to new heights. Do yourself a favor and catch Tonight Alive when they come to your town. I'll be there cheering them on with excitement as to see how these songs transfer in a live setting.

ALBUM REVIEW : ENEMY X

ENEMY X - "enemy x" (self released)

To say that I'm pretty excited that there's a new Enemy X record is an understatement. Finally releasing album number 2, Enemy X has more than enough twists and turns for their own episode of Behind the Music if that was still a thing.

Just when the band had enough of a seemingly impossible task of finding a new drummer, they found the impressive Mike Kimes .. the band got dealt another blow with trying to find a new singer. Enter Steve Thamert.

Lucky for us, when the band announced the addition of Steve - they unleashed "Crawl" at the same time thus cementing the new lineup. The hard hitting lead single was a crusher right out of the gates.

Enter another new componant to the Enemy X fold .. A VIDEO! A very effective performance video for "Crawl" got you familiar with this new lineup of Enemy X. Not only does Mike Kimes have the most impressive drum kit in the Minnesota scene but he has the technical skills to match. Steve Thamert's gravely vocals are completely different for the band but Enemy X has never had a singer that sounds anything like what's out there right now. It's impressive enough that they can find this many unique vocalists!

When you put those two pieces of the puzzle together along with the double guitar attack of Chris Miller and Chris Lynch and the pummeling bass of Jerry Birr - you get perhaps the most original metal band in the Minnesota scene. I'm willing to gamble on there is no other band in the metal scene that sounds like Enemy X.

Now add in Miller's tight production abilities and you have an album that's breaking down the wall for 2018 and raising the bar for bands releasing albums here on out! While having to wait on finding the perfect vocalist for this band, you know they have material laying around that has been perfected over multiple practices so that when the time is right, they aren't bluffing with this album. Each member has crafted beautiful technical aspects for every part of this record and Miller makes sure everyone shines throughout this entire album.

The album itself contains some of the band's most diverse work yet. That might be a scary statement for this band but it works seamelessly. Check this video for "Fall Into Pieces" for example.

This track brings a more melodic take to their sound along with "Until You're Free" and "Fallen World" while tying both worlds together with "Enter the Void".

While you still have the thrash metal workouts like the previously mentioned "Crawl" and the third track currently with a video "Dust" you have my other favorite track "Dirt" which stands out because it's just straight forward metal. This is a band that can truly do it all!

Start to finish Enemy X has created a multi-dimensional album that's not completely snapping necks the entire time when clearly they could if they wanted to with little effort. Stand up and take notice when this band rolls out their live show later this year. I expect Enemy X to melt stages along with this mammoth self titled album.

Purchase the album on ITunes for a ridiculously low price here!
