BARONESS brings a magical evening to a very intimate show in Minneapolis

Imagine one of your favorite bands playing a small club. Imagine finding out that the club is smaller than you think. It’s like your favorite band playing a basement show again, but with better sound.

These are the shows that you only hear about after words and that will probably never happen again. Luckily for Minneapolis, it happened twice on back to back nights.

BARONESS played the surprisingly small Bar Fly at the Skyway Theater in Minneapolis after headlining the main room in 2019. While I expected a more intimate show, it was WAY more intimate than I expected with almost 360 degrees view of the band. I took advantage of that watching the show from different spots throughout the night.

This being a “by request” set where ticket holders picked out a good chunk of the set. Then the band filled out the set playing some different songs that they normally don’t get to play. This made for a very special show … and even more special for those that went both nights.

Both nights started off with “Ogeechee Hymnal” as a nice welcome back for the band and the fans before going in different directions each night. Friday night’s show went straight in to a victorious “Take My Bones Away” that was a huge crowd sing along right off the bat. Saturday night, that song ended the main set making it a nice bookend of the two shows.

The most impressive thing that struck me while watching the set was how much the band thought about each song where it went in the set and what interlude would complement the next song. I wanted a live record before from Baroness, now I really want a live record from Baroness. This was a nice mix of favorites and songs you may have forgot about from the band’s epic catalog.

While you always want to hear “Take My Bones Away”, “March to the Sea”, “A Horse Called Golgatha”, “Shock Me” and “Isak”, the real gems in the set were the ones rarely played.

“Tourniquet” from Gold and Grey was just as amazing as on the record. The acoustic part in the middle of the show of “Cocainuim” and “Foolsong” was a beautiful quiet moment full of harmonies that needs to come out on a 7 inch vinyl. “Desperation Burns” was a nice way to come roaring back after the two acoustic songs.

The precision of the band playing off each other was at an all time high with this set. All 4 members locked in together all in the name of groove. There’s not many bands that could pull off a set of this magnitude as flawless as Baroness does. As was evident in the nice build up at the end of the main set going from “Seasons” into “The Sweetest Curse” into “The Birthing” before a rowdy “Isak” closed the main set.

The encore of “Wanderlust” is a song John said that they always play in Minneapolis and was a great way to end the show.

This show was the band being out on tour because they wanted to be out on tour not because they had to. You could clearly see on their faces that they were enjoying every moment of being on that stage creating that night for not only the fans but for themselves too. No one member of the band outshined the other, they all shined brightly together.

Being able to not only see a show like that in a small venue but also to help make the set list and get a show poster as you left was all well worth the price of admission. If you are able to get out to any of the remaining shows on the tour, definitely do so or you’ll be kicking yourself after words.

JINJER brings the vortex to The Fillmore!

JINJER brought their long awaited US tour to The Fillmore in Minneapolis a little over 17 months after the original May 2020 date. The anticipation was built up even more with the release of “Wallflower” and some of their strongest material to date.

JINJER brings a light show with them that is made for arenas but packed nicely on to the stage at The Fillmore making for a very impressive visual experience. From the start of the show with “Call Me A Symbol” and ending with “Vortex”, it was going to be a show that was not going to be easily forgot.

Each member of JINJER is a precise master of their instrument and that was extremely evident throughout the entire show. It was a master class in each instrument depending on which member you chose to watch for each song. Vlad doesn’t seem to hit the drums super hard but makes a loud statement with each note. Eugene’s bass playing stands out with intricacy while not over taking what Roman’s journey he’s taking you along on guitar. See my interview with Eugene below for more on that. Then you have Tatiana, a dominant force to be reckoned with on vocals. Her swagger is unmatched in the front person category reguardless of genre.

JINJER shows they are not messing around tonight heavily highlighting the new album “Wallflowers” playing most of the album live tonight which is greatly appreciated as it is such a strong album. “On the Top” and “I Speak Astronomy” go over big with the crowd just as much as “Disclosure!” from the new record. “Perennial” came off just as epic live as it does on record. Ending the main set with “Mediator” into “Colossus” was a nice touch as the both dominate.

While a good chunk of the crowd was probably waiting for “Pisces”, they did not get it tonight. JINJER ended the night with a victorious version of “Vortex” to send everyone home. While I’m sure it bummed some fans out that they didn’t hear “Pisces”, you can’t argue with the set list tonight as it highlighted some of their strongest material from the Wallflowers as well as Micro/Macro who’s touring cycle got cut short due to the pandemic. I look forward to JINJER’s return as this machine is only going to get stronger on the next tour!

METAL TOUR OF THE YEAR SURPASSES ALL EXPECTATIONS!

First off – it felt super good to walk back in to The Armory again after 23 months since the last time I was in the building.

The SOLD OUT and unfortunately now the last night of the Metal Tour of the Year 2021 ended at The Armory in Minneapolis, MN on a Tuesday night and the crowd was packed in there from the moment HB took the stage until Megad closed it down.

HATEBREED came out swinging with the classic “Empty Promises” right in to “Tear It Down” proving that this tour was going to live up to it’s name. Jamey Jasta declaring “I want everyone to have sore necks tomorrow!” The crowd obliged during the always crowd pleasing “This is Now” that always pits the left half of the crowd vs the right half to see who can be louder. The right side of the venue didn’t stand a chance! A lot of fans in the crowd very happy when they threw in their Slayer cover of “Ghosts of War” which was a very nice surprise. The surprises didn’t end there though! “Looking Down the Barrel of Today” was a huge pit starter. The crowd erupted when Art from LoG came out to take over for Matt on the drums for “Destroy Everything”. Art bashed those drums making that song harder than ever before and then Randy came running out to join in on the last part of “Destroy” and the crowd lost their minds. HATEBREED’s set everything you had ever wanted from the last night of a tour! HATEBREED did what HATEBREED does best, gets the crowd riled up for the rest of the night to try to top - which is always a friendly competition.

TRIVIUM came out with a very empty stage … only having the drums on stage, no amps or video screens. Just the four guys doing what they do best. Dominating. Straight out of the gate with the crushing “In The Court of The Dragon” from their Oct 8 album of the same name. They had the crowd in the palms of their hand from the first note. Coming up on having two albums out since they last toured, Trivium had plenty of material to choose from for their 40 min set. They played two from “What the Dead Men Say” next, the super catchy “Catastrophist” into “What the Dead Men Say” before the melodic part of the set came out with “The Heart From Your Hate”, “Strife” and the latest single “Feast of Fire”. Saying melodic as there are plenty of riffs to go around in those three songs. Closing out the (guitar, bass or drums .. your choice) clinic was the always crushing “In Waves” which I swear gets heavier every tour. I look forward to having them come back around on their own as they have a lot of new material to play for the masses.

LAMB OF GOD put on an arena sized performance from the moment the black curtain dropped after the intro to “Memento Mori”. This was a band that was clearly planning on how they could top their previous live shows in the downtime from the pandemic. LOG put everything they had in to the last show of the tour, laser focused on getting every ounce of energy out of the crowd that was pent up from the last 18+ months. “Ruin” showed up early in the set followed by the pyro heavy “Walk With Me In Hell” so hot you could feel the flames anywhere in The Armory. Being the good dudes they are, LOG paused after the first 3 songs so that the medics could get a fan out who needed medical attention. Wasting no time after it was cleared launching back in to “Resurrection Man” from the self titled record. The pits were loud and proud for “Now You Got Something to Die For” and “Set to Fail.”

I spent time wondering if anyone from HB or Trivium were going to come out and prank LOG during their set as if it was going to happen, it would be during their set … nothing happened. We came to the last 3 songs of the evening – a whirlwind “Contractor” followed up in break neck speed by “Laid to Rest” and “Redneck”. Lamb of God just showed that they are ready to headline festivals and arenas worldwide. Give them the sign and they will tear it down.

MEGADETH came out to a loud crowd with "Hangar 18" right out of the gate. Great visuals backed the band as they tore thru some classics in their massive catalog. The always fantastic "Sweating Bullets" sounded as great as ever with the crowd singing along! Where I was standing .. some of the crowd did the actual words and some of them did Dave's guitar part. Dave kicked throat cancer's ass and sounded fantastic. Closing out the night with 3 songs you can't argue with even if you tried "Symphony of Destruction", "Peace Sells" and "Holy Wars ... The Punishment Due".

Dave said that they would be resuming this tour next year as they didn't get to play any of the Canada dates on the tour due to the pandemic. Even if it's the same 4 bands again, I will gladly take a second round of this fantastic tour!

My (Nick) last show was BEARTOOTH with A DAY TO REMEMBER and I PREVAIL at The Armory in Minneapolis back in October 2019 so it only seemed fitting that my first show back was BEARTOOTH at The Fillmore in Minneapolis 22 months later. I've been excited to finally see this venue as the shows I was going to all got scrapped because of COVID. When we got closer to the date and we knew the show was happening Brett and I had to go and check it out.

BEARTOOTH came out swinging with "Below" and "Devastation" from their impressive new album Below and the sold out crowd was amped up right along with the band. Followed up quickly with "Hated" and "Sick of Me", those would surprisingly be the only two songs from the Aggressive album all night. Then came some standouts from the new album that went off just as one would expect with "Dominate" and "Hell of It" getting the pits swirling. The crowd sang along loudly to "Skin" from the new album just as much as they did when "Bad Listener," "Disease" and "In Between" ended the main set.

BEARTOOTH really up'd their game with the visuals for this tour using visuals from their Below Livestream and incorporating them in to this tour along with their already impressive light show that they've had the last couple tours. This is a band charging for their place at the front of the pack. The band was tight and had no rust to shake off from the COVID downtime. Beartooth has got the songs and now they got the visuals. Already a festival standout, you give this band some pyro and they'll be taking over arenas.

Overall, 8 of the 12 songs from Below showed up in the set for this tour and every single one was a welcomed addition from the frenzied crowd. I don't know who was more happy to be there, the band or the fans. Beartooth could have easily played another 30 minutes and the crowd wouldn't have let up. But hey, you gotta leave them begging for more for the next tour right?

WAGE WAR came out to raging start with Stephen's impressive pounding of the drums on "Stitch". I'm kinda surprised his drums didn't fall apart. That's a way to start off a set! The back and forth between Briton's vocals and Cody's melodic vocals paired well with Beartooth giving them and a great audience to be in front of if they weren't already aware of Wage War. The crowd was fully engaged and enjoying every moment of their 40 minute set singing along with every melodic part of the songs. Even the newly released "Circle the Drain" got a nice pop from the crowd who is clearly excited about their new album Manic coming out October 1! Keep an eye on Wage War, if this performance was any indication you'll be seeing a lot more from this Florida band.
