UNDEROATH @ Skyway Theater in Mpls

UNDEROATH
Skyway Theater in Minneapolis, MN 11/28/18

While the weather outside wasn't fun, inside heated up real quick when UNDEROATH took the stage for their Minneapolis stop at the Skyway Theater for their Erase Me headlining tour! UNDEROATH brought with them a light show big enough for an arena for this club performance. The band started things off properly by tearing into "On My Teeth". You could feel the energy going from the stage igniting the crowd and back again especially when the sound of the projector starts off "In Regards to Myself"!

UNDEROATH packed the set with favorites from They're Only Chasing Safety, Define the Great Line and Lost in the Sound of Separation weaving the new tracks from Erase Me in there strategically treating fans to half the new record. The band was firing on all cylinders between Spencer bouncing all around the stage and Aaron smashing the drums, Chris, Tim, James and Grant getting the crowd fired up. You knew when they launched in to a favorite like "Reinventing Your Exit" or "A Boy Brushed Red Living in Black and White" to the new songs "Rapture" and "ihateit", the crowd ate it up, singing back every word.

The long wait for UNDEROATH's return was well worth it for the spectacle that they rolled out. It has now been announced that UNDEROATH will return to the area with BREAKING BENJAMIN, SKILLET and FIGHT THE FURY at the Verzion Center in Mankato on March 29, 2019! If this show is any indication of what they will bring to the BREAKING BENJAMIN tour, UNDEROATH will have no problem winning over new fans on that arena tour.

MINISTRY and ALIEN WEAPONRY @ Skyway Theater in Mpls

MINISTRY, ALIEN WEAPONRY
Skyway Theater in Minneapolis - Nov 27, 2018

MINISTRY
returned to the Skyway Theater in Minneapolis with a new show and a new tour behind their wildly popular new album "AmeriKKKant". A return to form for Ministry, I was excited to see how the songs played out live and the crowd was in for a treat as they played the new album front to back for the first half of the show.

Uncle Al is back with a vengeance and this set proved he's not ready to slow it down any time soon! Al and band were in fine form ripping thru the entire set with an intense backdrop of visuals.

It was very exciting to see local guy Derek Abrams bashing the drums for Ministry finally. Derek has drummed for DODD, GINGERJAKE, BLACK FLOOD DIESEL and SKYWIND over the years so this I'm sure is a dream gig for him! Derek was very technical and precise - which is exactly what Ministry needs in a drummer - while producing a little flair of his own to go with this monstrous mayhem.

What do you do after you've played a 50 minute set of brand new material? Al rewarded the fans with an onslaught of favorites from "The Land of Rape and Honey", "Psalm 69" and "The Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste". Fans were treated to one hell of a show so it will be fun to see how they can top this one.

ALIEN WEAPONRY brought it with a fantastic opening set. The band played a little longer to cover for Carpenter Brut who either was a no show or was no longer on the tour. If you are a fan of Sepultura and Soulfly, you definitely need to be checking Alien Weaponry out now! This young band unleashed an absolute fury getting the fans ready for Ministry.

Henry is an absolute monster behind the drums. Henry, Lewis and Ethan make a wall of sound that you would swear there was more people on stage than 3. The songs from their album "Tu" sounded even more intense live.

This was an impressive showing for this new band, keep an eye on Alien Weaponry. I hadn't heard a lot of their album before seeing them live but I will definately be checking it out now! They are going to be a band you need to know!

LIVE : GWAR, HATEBREED, MISS MAY I and RINGWORM in Portland, OR and St. Paul, MN

GWAR, HATEBREED, MISS MAY I, RINGWORM
October 16, 2018 – Roseland Ballroom in Portland, OR
October 27, 2018 – Myth in St. Paul, MN
Photos by Brett Zisler

Not very often you get a chance to see two shows on the same tour – let alone 11 days apart from each other. I jumped at the opportunity to see this tour in two different venues in two different cities.

RINGWORM is a great opener for this tour. Metal with some thrash thrown in. The pit was going in both Portland and St. Paul. I don’t know too much about them but I’m guessing their set was close to the same in both cities. In St. Paul, I saw quite a few people walking around with Ringworm merch after their set!

MISS MAY I really impressed me in Portland. I had not seen the band in quite a while so I was very interested in seeing the band live again. Their set was the same in both cities coming out swinging with “Swallow Your Teeth” from their new album and going right into “Hey Mister” from At Heart. In both cities, the pits were circling and people were singing along to certain songs in the set. This band has come a long way since I saw them at Warped Tour on the At Heart album cycle – they are tighter musicians who put together a well crafted set. There was two slower songs that didn’t go over as well in St. Paul as they did in Portland. Both crowds were ready to mosh and Miss May I gladly gave the crowd what they wanted ending with “Under Fire” and “Shadows Inside.” I’m really looking forward to what this band does next. Listening to Shadows Inside again in between the Portland and St. Paul shows, they really have crafted their best work with this new album.

HATEBREED dominates every time you see them live. It’s cathartic. The best part about seeing Hatebreed live in two different cities is that you get two different sets. Yes, there were songs that were played in both cities. Jamey calls out the songs and Matt, Frank, Chris and Wayne crush it every time. I was going to jot down each song they played in St. Paul and I gave up about 5 songs in. I was too busy enjoying the show and I knew I missed a song. I never get tired of hearing songs from Satisfaction and Perseverance. The St. Paul set included a few more songs from The Rise of Brutality, which is now celebrating it's 15 year anniversary. Time to go back and revisit that album a little more!

Both Portland and St. Paul had fans coming out of “Mosh Retirement” for their set and at multiple points in both shows, I don’t know who was having more fun – the band or the crowd? That’s what keeps me coming back all these years later. I know Hatebreed are going to put on a phenomenal show filled with crowd interaction and at least one song you never thought you’d hear in the set (“Doomsayer” in St. Paul)! Next year will be the 25th Anniversary of Hatebreed and I can’t wait for them to come around again! I’m putting in my request right now for “Last Breath”!

One would think the crowd hit their peak during Hatebreed’s set. No, that was just them stretching. Portland’s Roseland Theater is easily half the size of St. Paul’s Myth – both in the overall size of the venue and in size of the stage. At the Myth, GWAR really got to spread out and utilize every inch of the space. In Portland, things seemed a little crowded but it never got in the way of the performance.

I’m not sure I want to admit this but these were my first two GWAR shows. I wish I would’ve saw them with Oderus. Reguardless, GWAR does not disappoint EVER. If you thought they did, then you didn’t engulf yourself in the show enough. I’ve never seen so many white t-shirts in my entire life at a concert and it was quickly pointed out why. It’s the ultimate souvenir! How much blood did you get on you?

People bring their families to this show. Long time GWAR fans bringing their kids to enjoy the experience with them. Who would’ve ever thought family bonding could be so much fun!?! This would prove to be extremely fun to watch just how these kids couldn’t believe what they were seeing, making new GWAR fans every night.

While I'm thinking about it ... how do they play so damn well with those huge costumes on? I don’t want to give away too much about the show as I don’t want to spoil it for someone who hasn’t seen the tour yet. The fun started off right away with “War on GWAR” and continued into “I’ll Be Your Monster”. "Saddam a Go-Go" showed up early in the set to many surprised fans! The VIP’s in St. Paul, were coming unglued waiting to be fed to the meat grinder. It wouldn’t be long and their dream would become a reality. Ending with the 1-2 finisher of "F*** This Place" and "Sick of You" and well, hopefully you survived. All that was missing was their cover of AC/DC's "If You Want Blood, You Got It" even though there was enough of that to go around.

The behind the scenes of a GWAR show would be extremely fascinating. One day I would be very interested to find out exactly how much blood they go thru each show. Who has to make all that blood each day? Who cleans up after a GWAR show? All questions that might never be answered but one asks anyways. Just enjoy more of Brett's pictures...

LIVE : TRIVIUM, AVATAR, LIGHT THE TORCH @ Myth in St. Paul, MN

TRIVIUM, AVATAR, LIGHT THE TORCH
Myth in St. Paul, MN
October 22, 2018

This was a tour I’d been impatiently waiting for since it was announced. TRIVIUM coming back to the area in support of their fantastic record “The Sin and The Sentence”. AVATAR finally coming here in support of their stellar “Avatar Country”. LIGHT THE TORCH arrives for their debut MN live performance in support of their excellent debut “Revival.” 3 bands with 3 strong records and you know they are all going to have strong live performances.

I’ve been waiting for Howard Jones and company to come around and this was a great tour for them to showcase this new record. LIGHT THE TORCH opened with a blistering “The Bitter End”, Howard tore all over the stage looking in fantastic shape. The band has a new fire to them and the crowd took to it right away. “Calm Before the Storm” followed and Howard started joking with the crowd who ate it up. The new single “The Safety of Disbelief” sounded even better live than it does on record. Francesco Artusato riffed in fine form and Ryan Wombacher held the low end down with intensity. With new drummer Mike Sciulara in the band, the band has a new fire underneath them and were all having a great time up there. The band ended their quick 30 min set with “Die Alone,” “Embrace the Torture” and “The Way We Die”. I can’t wait for them to come back around again.

AVATAR came out to a hero’s welcome. It’s been awhile since they’ve been in the area and the crowd was ready. AVATAR came out to “Hail the Apocalypse” and sent the crowd into a fury. Following it up with a pit turning “Let It Burn” and “Get In Line” before letting the pit take a little breather for the King’s fine guitar work in “Bloody Angel”. Johannes had the crowd’s attention the entire show and I swear this band gets tighter live every time I see them. A great live version of “The Eagle Has Landed” followed with “Torn Apart” and “One More Hill” being tracks I wasn’t totally familiar with but a chunk of the crowd sang along to. “A Statue of the King” got the crowd moving again before the end of the set mainstay “Smells Like a Freak Show” brought the set to a close way too soon.

I’m calling it now, the next time AVATAR returns to the area, it will be on their own headlining run. This is a future headliner. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Bring yourself to Avatar Country and get in before they headline arenas and festivals.

TRIVIUM came out of the gate full throttle with an even more vicious “Betrayer” and the band and fans alike were excited for Trivium’s return to Minnesota. Quickly launching into “Throes of Perdition” from Shogun and “Beyond Oblivion” the crowd kept the pit moving before giving the crowd a little break. Matt let the crowd know early that the best stop on the tour thus far was Philadelphia and Minnesota was ready to step up to the plate and take the victory as the band tore into “Into the Mouth of Hell We March”. I was glad to see the band bring out “Suffocating Sight” from Ascendancy as well as “He Who Spawned the Furies” from Shogun into the set, two sort of deep tracks for the Trivium faithful! The band brought out Jared Dines and Howard Jones for a you had to be there to believe it “The Wretcheness Inside” and kept the pit turning for “A Gunshot to the Head of Trepidation” (which sounds just as mammoth now as it did with Ascendancy was released 13 years ago!) and “The Sin and The Sentence”. Howard returned in the encore for “Pull Harder” and “In Waves” leaving the crowd beyond excited about the show they just witnessed.

Later, we all found out Matt needed to leave the tour early as his twins are coming sooner than expected so Howard Jones, Johannes and Jared Dines will be helping them out in these once in a lifetime Trivium shows to wrap up the tour. This turned out to be a special tour for more reasons than one!

CLUTCH kicks off the "Book of Bad Decisions" US Tour in MN!

CLUTCH, SEVENDUST, TYLER BRYANT AND THE SHAKEDOWN

Myth in Maplewood, MN

September 18, 2018

CLUTCH kicked off the "Book of Bad Decisions" US Tour on Sept 18 at the Myth in Maplewood, MN bringing SEVENDUST and TYLER BRYANT AND THE SHAKEDOWN with them as one of fall's must see tours! CLUTCH and SEVENDUST have very die hard fan bases and teaming them up together brings in new fans for both bands as was evident with this first show of the tour!

TYLER BRYANT AND THE SHAKEDOWN played a very solid set of rambunctious rock and roll. We only caught the last two songs but this is a band that you should have on your radar to check out the next time you can. This band is only going to get more solid!

What can be said about SEVENDUST and CLUTCH that haven't been said before. Both bands have phenomenal yet different live shows.

SEVENDUST came swinging right out of the gate with "Enemy" into "Face to Face". Usually saved for last "Face to Face" showed up second song in the set and was still a barn burner!

SEVENDUST launched right into "Denial" before making way for the only new song of the set, the new single "Unforgiven". "Unforgiven" is classic Sevendust with trade off's between LJ and Morgan.

Somewhere around this point, LJ made a joke about Morgan having his whole condo up on stage while the rest of the band has smaller piece of real estate on the stage. But really it wouldn't be a Sevendust show without Morgan stomping and beating that entire kit!

SEVENDUST went back to the first self titled album for "Too Close To Hate" which feels like forever since I've heard that live. Then to my favorite Sevendust album of all time Home for "Waffle"!

When you only have 45 minutes, a lot of favorites are going to be left off the set list. Closing out with "Bitch" and then "Thank You", it just left the crowd wanting more! While I could list off a bunch of great Sevendust closing songs, there was no "Black" which I figured would be the show closer. Sevendust please come back sooner than later!

CLUTCH

Another thing that can be said of both Sevendust and Clutch is that they both have huge discographies with many great songs and they both are riding high with phenomenal new albums. Book of Bad Decisions as an album screams to be played live. Clutch did not disappoint playing SEVEN songs from the new album! (That’s pretty much half of the new album). The rest of the set list came from throughout the band’s extensive catalog.

Starting off with “Gimmie the Keys” and running into “Vision Quest” .. if the rest of this show kept on pace, we are all in for a treat tonight. Playing a song I hadn’t thought about in a while “The House That Peterbilt” showed up in the set from the self titled album. That’s one thing I’ve learned over the last couple years, Clutch will always throw you a curve ball and it’s quite exciting when they do!

“How to Shake Hands” got a big reaction from the crowd and how could you not with those lyrics! Neil made a quick joke stating the next song was about the first time he ran for president and went into “El Jefe Speaks”. I still get as excited to hear “The Mob Goes Wild” as when I first heard it years and years ago. “Hot Bottom Feeder” got Neil laughing stating that’s the first time he’s seen people mosh to recipe. Ending the main set with the sweet sounds of the cowbell on “D.C. Sound Attack” and getting everyone all excited with the combo of “Electric Worry” and “X-Ray Visions” before sending the crowd on their way.

If you get a chance to see this tour, do not miss it! This is one of the most satisfying tours I've seen in a while. Just plain fun front to back. Everyone had a great time and enjoyed their time at the show. I left feeling refreshed and that's exactly how a great show should make you feel! There’s not a whole lot of bands as tight and on point as Clutch and Sevendust and this tour is victory for the bands and fans alike!

BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE brings their "Gravity" world tour to MN!

BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE with BAD OMENS

Myth in Maplewood, MN

SEPT 15, 2018

BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE

BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE are one of those bands that are huge in Europe but still play smaller venues in the U.S. BFMV brought their massive sound to the Myth for the second leg of their U.S. tour this time bringing BAD OMENS in tow. Unfortunately, WE CAME AS ROMANS were not on the first couple dates of the tour (R.I.P. Kyle) but joined up with the tour two days after the Myth show.

BULLET opened up the show with two songs from the new album Gravity including the stellar single “Over It” before the fan favorite “Your Betrayal” kicked things into a frenzy. “4 Words To Choke Upon” from The Poison made an appearance and made me miss “All These Things I Hate Revolve Around Me” not being in the set.

“Scream Aim Fire” sounded super powerful tonight which would’ve been a great closer to the main set. But you can’t really argue with the encore being a tight set of “No Way Out”, “Suffocating Under Words of Sorrow”, “Tears Don’t Fall” and “Waking the Demon”.

Here’s to hoping we see BFMV in a festival setting soon to really show the masses in the U.S. what the U.K. already know!
