AVATAR quickly defeat "A Case of the Monday's" at The Fillmore

AVATAR brought their “In The Airwaves” Tour to the Fillmore in Minneapolis, MN on Monday, November 17 for what turned out to be a fantastic turnout of Minnesota Metalheads who got there early and stayed until the very end. AVATAR brought us out to sea as the music in between bands quietly interjected the sound of waves along the 1930’s era big band/jazz songs that played during change over. The lights started to go down closer to start time and the sounds of the waves got louder. The lights dropped and Avatar rolled out standing in formation like they were the front of a ship coming in to port.
The stage reminded you of an old time theater with red curtains as the backdrop and on both sides of the stage. Everything on stage was on rollers so the crew could move pieces in and out without stopping the performance itself. I personally loved that the drum riser split in two so they could bring pieces in and out from behind the curtain which was especially important when The King arrived in his throne!
Everything you want and love about Avatar was proudly on display in Monday’s performance. There’s no vocalist that can command a stage, sometimes without saying a word, quite like Johannes Eckerstrom. It’s hard to find a band that each member themselves have their own commanding larger than life presence. Drummer John Alfredsson just has to give the audience a look and everyone in the building is ready to go on the journey with him. We even got a point where all 5 members stood at the front of the stage with John having a small drum kit for “Colossus” and “Howling at the Waves”. The King himself steals the show when he appears for “Glory to Our King” and “Legend of the King” while blessing us with some of his finest royal shredding.
AVATAR did a fantastic job of spreading out the new songs throughout the set with “In The Airwaves” and “Death and Glitz” fitting in quite nicely along side favorites “Silence in the Age of Apes” and “Let It Burn” before closing out the main set with “Tonight We Must Be Warriors” before coming back out to clobber the crowd with “Dance Devil Dance”, “Smells Like a Freak Show” and “Hail the Apocalypse” before the curtain call.
AVATAR prove time and time again that they can headline the biggest stages you can throw at them. They bring the show and hit after hit after hit. The sky is the limit with what this band can pull off given the opportunity. With this show being all ages, it was awesome to see many families coming out to the freak show for what shall be the first of many visits to Avatar Country.
ALIEN WEAPONRY is back in town with a new album to support “Te Ra” and wasted no time with their 30 minute set getting straight to the point bringing heavy riffage for Sepultura fans. “Taniwha” was the standout of the set complete with extra vocals piped in from Randy Blythe before closing out with a crowd pleaser “Kai Tangata”.
Kicking off the night in spectacular fashion was Las Vegas’ SPIRITWORLD. Not only the best dressed band I’ve seen all year but also now the best opening band I’ve seen all year. Vocalist Stu Folsom wields the microphone like a madman with a whip stomping around the stage. The band was primed to kick a and make new fans right out the gate as they focused on their more neck snapping rippers for their short 30 min set. The band themselves are top notch, they play tight and they play hard. “Waiting on the Reaper” and set closer “U L C E R” were standouts in the set. Keep an eye out for Spiritworld, if all is right in the world, they’ll be headlining their own tours soon.

HALESTORM and LINDSEY STIRLING bring a magical night of music to the outdoors!

A perfect late summer/early fall evening for an outdoor rock show this past Friday night at the Treasure Island Amphitheater in Welch, MN played host to an incredible evening of music from hard rock favorites Halestorm and violin and dance wizard Lindsey Stirling. Apocalyptica opened the evening with an exciting set of Metallica covers to celebrate their first Apocalyptica Plays Metallica album and their recently released second collection of Metallica reworkings. You can’t NOT bob your head and have a good time when they’re up there rocking “Master of Puppets”, “Enter Sandman” and “Seek and Destroy” complete with guitar solos on the cello! Apocalyptica perfectly opened the night of what was to come.
I’ve only previously seen LINDSEY STIRLING do her fantastic Christmas show so I wasn’t too sure how Lindsey was going to do in a rock show setting. Any doubts that I might have had were quickly wiped away during the opening number “The Phoenix”. Dare I say it got heavier for the second number “Underground”? All of this is thanks to shredder Jason Richardson joining Lindsey’s band for this tour. Lindsey already had a tight band backing her but with Jason added in there, it takes her show to a heavier level. This might have been of some shock to old school Lindsey fans as it sounds vastly different than her records. However, this crowd ate it up playing perfectly to a hard rock crowd! Lindsey got a good laugh out of the crowd when she brought out “The Wheel” to pick the evening’s random song. “Carol of the Bells” was one of the 6 songs that could be played and Lindsey said “Hey, Carol of the Bells slaps!” Personally, I would have loved to hear this band tackle the Christmas classic but the wheel decided on “Til the Light Goes Out” which did not disappoint. Lindsey’s fantastic dancing while playing the violin is amazing enough but paired with her stellar dancers and this heavier band. Chef’s kiss! Lindsey, please release a live album with this band!
HALESTORM came out swinging with “Fallen Star” the lead track off their new album “Everest”, a heavy number that perfectly sets off not only the new album but also tonight’s live show. Halestorm kept the gas pedal down with “I Miss the Misery” and “Love Bites (So Do I)” before slowing it down for a minute with their latest single “Darkness Always Wins” which rocked a little harder live. “Like a Woman Can” went over big with the crowd, the bluesy rocker for the ladies in the crowd. Lzzy sat at a beautiful grand piano emblazed with the Halestorm logo and gave the crowd an encore rendition of her karaoke performance from the previous night inside Treasure Island of the classic “I Will Always Love You” and nailed it! The band came back out for a stunning version of the Everest closer “How Will You Remember Me?” dedicated to Ozzy! The band took the crowd in to overdrive with the unhinged “Watch Out!”. The opening of “Familiar Taste of Poison” was given a nice classic rock overhaul complete with Lzzy drinking from a chalice (maybe a nod to Ozzy as well) which led in to a killer version of “Rain Your Blood on Me” also from the new album. “Everest” sounded just as much of a mountain climbing journey closing out the main set as it does on record, completing the night with an impressive 9 of the 12 songs from the new record. Arejay’s drum solo brought the hand from the back of the Everest record to life and gave the crew a chance to torment Arejay at the same time.
The encore brought Lindsey Stirling back out to perform the new version of “Shatter Me” with Halestorm as the backing band. The track was just released earlier in the day on a deluxe edition of Lindsey’s “Shatter Me” album. The track takes on a heavier vibe adding the guys from Halestorm and brought it to an even more epic level with Lindsey joining Halestorm in front of all those Marshall amps sharing the stage together.
This was an epic evening of magical proportions. Halestorm and Lindsey Stirling came with a co-headlining run that showcased each of their strengths perfectly while trying out something new. If they do a second leg of this tour, do not miss it! This was a perfect billing bringing each other’s fans together to make a memorable evening for every fan!

SHINEDOWN brings the heat to the Target Center!

SHINEDOWN made their long awaited return to Minnesota last Monday at the Target Center in Minneapolis bringing their "Dance, Kid, Dance" Tour to town! SHINEDOWN brought BUSH and MORGAN WADE along on this leg of the tour along with all the pyro they could fit in the Target Center. SHINEDOWN impressed the crowd for their entire 2 hour set which brought the newest songs "Dance, Kid, Dance" and "Three Six Five" fitting in perfectly with classics like "Devour", "Enemies" and "Sound of Madness"! SHINEDOWN even threw in a cover of Prince's "Purple Rain" for good measure!
BUSH got the crowd fired up and ready to go playing a few of the new songs from their recently released album "I Bet Lonliness" along side the classics from "Sixteen Stone".
MORGAN WADE started off the night bringing a different vibe and made some new fans!
