NEKROGOBLIKON BRINGS THE DARKNESS TO MINNEAPOLIS
CONCERT REVIEW :: NEKROGOBLIKON
Varsity Theater - Minneapolis, MN
May 18, 2025
Photos and Review by Brett Zisler
You just never know what to expect when the extremely internet famous podcast host, author and frontman, John Goblikon, and metal titans, Nekrogoblikon, make their way into your town. This past Sunday night, Minneapolis fans were treated to an onslaught to their ears and eyes Nekrogoblikon headlined the Varsity Theater.
With an inflatable replica of John Goblikon’s head center stage, Nekrogoblikon opened their 13-song set with their always popular song “Darkness” whipping the crowd into a frenzy. Dickey Allen & John Goblikon leading the charge commanded the stage as guitarists Alex Alereza and Joe Nelson provided the footprint of riffs for the night. It’s been amazing to see the rise of this band over the past few years. Fresh off their performance at Milwaukee Metal Fest, Nekrogoblikon proved they are most than just a band with Goblin and his stunning good looks.
Nekrogoblikon weaved their way through fan favorites “Dressed as Goblins” “Fiend” and “Show me Your Goblin.” John even entertained the crowd in between songs with his quick wit and impressive knowledge of Minnesota Twins baseball, maybe more than some fans…….
With the night coming to a close, Nekrogoblikon started their encore out with “The Magic Spider” complete with beautiful choreography by the band members. To watch the crowd sing along to every word and then only to go crazy as John announced “This Is It,” you can see why the popularity of this band has grown so much. While they entertain you visually, this band is no joke with it comes to their music. The future is green and bright for Nekrogoblikon!

SHINEDOWN kicks off "Dance, Kid, Dance" tour with an unforgettable evening in Des Moines!
CONCERT REVIEW :: SHINEDOWN, BEARTOOTH
WELLS FARGO ARENA - DES MOINES, IA
4/25/25
Photos by Brett Zisler
Review by Nick
SHINEDOWN kicked off their Dance, Kid, Dance tour at the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, IA this past Friday night. Well over 10,000 excited fans filled the arena for the first night of the tour with lots of them showing up hours in advance of doors to get their spot on the floor with this new stage design.
We got to talk with Brent and Eric from Shinedown before their set and they were excited about this new stage design and there was not a bad seat in the house because of it. We caught different parts of the set from different parts of the arena and everyone had a great view with everything that did go on. Massive props to Shinedown for creating a set up with so many stairs which let them run pretty much thru 2/3 of the floor length in the arena. They made sure everyone in that arena had a moment where they felt close to the action.
SHINEDOWN brought everything you would ever want in an arena show. They made sure you were going to have fun and sing along all night long. You don’t know how much you miss feeling the heat from the flames until you have them again and in this case, coming from multiple angles. SHINEDOWN made sure you were staying on the edge of your seat if you weren’t standing with the pyro. Opening the show with “Dance, Kid, Dance”, SHINEDOWN were firing on all cylendars right out of the gate, even cranking up the PA to be louder during the song. “Asking For It” and “Cut the Cord’ made early appearances in set all with massive crowd participation. “Devil” and “Enemies” brought all the heat live and worked really well with the new single “Three, Six, Five” in between them with all being a sentimental almost ballad showcasing SHINEDOWN doing what they do best weaving great songwriting no matter how heavy or not, musically and/or emotionally the song is.
I’ll admit, I don’t know the SHINEDOWN catalog as in and out as most fans – I’m still learning. My favorite part of the show was when they used the “B stage” in the middle of the arena to do a deep cuts set bringing out “Call Me” from The Sound of Madness, “Burning Bright” from Leave a Whisper, “Thick as Theieves” from Threat to Survival and “Breaking Inside” from The Sound of Madness in an intimate moment where the whole arena had a great view of the band. Even though I wasn’t super familiar with the three later songs, that moment of everything stripped down to just those four guys on a small stage together with an anything goes vibe. This led to some funny moments in between songs as no one was sure if Zach was going to make the show as he was passing kidney stones at the hospital before the show. Zach, at least during the show, looked like he was having the time of his life up there and let the crowd know he wasn’t going to miss the show. Some of the songs in this portion of the set were changed out the next night in Omaha, leading to an exciting portion if you are attending more than one show on this tour. Even if you’re watching the set lists, you won’t know what might be played for those four songs.
Something about the night made “A Symptom of Being Human”, “Simple Man” and “Monsters” hit different tonight than in past visits. “A Symptom of Being Human” is a powerful spot in the set to begin with but it was even more magical Friday night. The crowd at certain points were louder than the PA during “Simple Man” and the closer “Second Chance” giving both songs extra love from the crowd back to the band and back out to the crowd again. I’m pretty sure the whole arena shook during Barry’s opening bass drum hits on “The Sound of Madness”.
BEARTOOTH steamrolled through a 45 min set and understood the assignment right out of the gate – get that crowd rowdy and ready for Shinedown. They stuck to the hits for their set, all the songs you would know that you hear on the radio were all there. Caleb ran around the stage the entire set and brought all the good vibes with him. The only missing song was “Bad Listener” but you couldn’t argue with the set they had picked. Lots of crowd participation. Another fantastic set from BEARTOOTH.
SHINEDOWN delievered exactly what you would hope from a live arena show. The fire, the pyro, the unpredictibility, the hits, the deep cuts, the sing alongs! This was a Friday night that no one in that arena will forget any time soon. SHINEDOWN and BEARTOOTH come back together on tour with new albums soon!

DOROTHY previews her Redemption Tour at Treasure Island
CONCERT REVIEW :: DOROTHY, BULLETS & BUTTERFLIES
Treasure Island Event Center – Welch, MN

DOROTHY brought the heat of her Redemption Tour to the Treasure Island Event Center in Welch, MN on a cold and rainy Saturday night. Cold weather isn’t going to stop any MN rock fans and they definitely showed up for this excellent double bill of female fronted rock and roll. DOROTHY’s new album “The Way” that’s a great mixture of her first album “Rockisdead” and her previous album “Gifts from the Holy Ghost”, strong songwriting and great riffs.
If you ever wanted to attend what feels like a private soundstage rehearsal before tour, that’s what the vibe was like for this show. Two weeks before the tour starts, DOROTHY provided MN with a peek behind the curtain as she gets ready to take the show on the road. DOROTHY has a strong band behind her that can solo and jam wherever needed as the show started out with a little jam session before DOROTHY came out and they launched in to “Down to the Bottom”. DOROTHY’s vocals were on point for “The Devil I Know” from her new album The Way before making “Ain’t Our Time to Die” a little heavier fitting nicely in to the set.
DOROTHY got a nice sing along going for the newer track “Mud” showing the crowd has lots of love for the new material along with the live debut of the standout track from the new album “Bones”. Which then was followed by a little reimagination of the classic “After Midnight” taking a little slower approach from the original while still keeping it pretty rocking. Before “After Midnight”, DOROTHY told the crowd her life is a little different now than when those songs came out, going to bed by 9pm. DOROTHY even lovingly poked a little fun at those who just might have had a few drinks before the show leading in to “Whiskey Fever” and the crowd ate it up. This is when DOROTHY was at her best, rocking out and having fun with the crowd even though she says she’s bad at banter between songs.
Let’s be honest, no one is having a bad time when “Raise Hell” comes on. DOROTHY then brought out a little bit of a deep cut with the cover of “Key to the Highway” from Slash’s new blues covers record. The track fit very well in to the set and was a nice nod for everyone looking for something new in the set. “Gifts from the Holy Ghost” closed out the main set before the encore brought the house down with a fired up “Tombstone Town”. DOROTHY fans going to the Redemption Tour are in for a treat when this rolls in to town. Bare bones, no bull, warts and all rock show the way it should be.
Minneapolis’ BULLETS AND BUTTERFLIES opened the show celebrating the release of their debut album “Full Circle” playing a chock full 40 minute set showcasing the release. The newer band featuring local scene vets from Skywind, Vaudeville and Cold Kingdom played to their strengths right away with “Rabbit Hole” kicking off the set – with newcomer Josephine’s vocals shining in the forefront over a rocker that shows how tight of a band the 5 of them are together. The band had a good fan base they brought with for the show as evident by the Bullets and Butterflies shirts in the crowd. Newer song “Complicated” sounded great along side previously released singles “Abandon Ship” and “Sleepless Nights.” The band tore it up for their last song, the unreleased sassy rocker “Ain’t Yours to Lose” proving this band still has many tricks up their sleeve for the future. Keep an eye on this band, it’s only the beginning for them and they’ll only get stronger.
