A cold Sunday night in Minneapolis, Minnesota during January wasn’t enough to deter thrash diehards from experiencing the new era of Kerry King’s career. Fresh off the release of his first solo album, FROM HELL I RISE, the Fillmore Minneapolis became ground zero for a night of pounding metal riffs.

This was Kerry King’s first time as a solo artist appearing in Minnesota, and what an impact he made. Surrounded by elite musicians such as Kyle Sanders (HellYeah), Phil Demmel (formerly Machine Head), Paul Bostaph (Slayer & Testament) and Mark Osegueda (Death Angel), this lineup brought a whole new level of thrash. Opening with “Where I Reign” and “Rage,” the blueprint for the night was set and there was no turning back.

The crowd interaction with the new songs was incredible to see. It only shows the magnitude of how impactful both Kerry King has been. Forging their way into singles “Residue” and “Idle Hands,” it was evident that these songs and this band is here to stay. Kerry perfectly inserted his first Slayer cover of the night by putting “Repentless” seven songs into the set. The Fillmore turned even more chaotic when King covered Slayer’s “Disciple” and then paying tribute to Iron Maiden covering “Purgatory” and “Killers.”

All one could think leaving the Fillmore was how absolutely heavy and intense of a show they had just seen. Watching King close out the night with “Raining Blood” “Black Magic” & “From Hell I Rise” brought a smile to the faces and fists in the air. The perfect blend of old and new proving that trash metal is alive and well.
